El Fayum City

Fayoum is the largest oasis in Egypt and the closest to the Nile River and Cairo. Lake Qarun present in the region was formed about 70,000 years ago when the Nile flooded the depression that now occupies the region of Fayoum. Today, the channels that connect it to the river feed the lake.

The oases have historically represented what was called “the garden of Egypt” and still today they produce a large quantity of fruit and vegetables, contributing to a particularly important percentage of the food needs of the whole of Egypt.

Lake Qarun

Lake Qarun is also known for its abundant fauna. A large number of migratory birds use the lake as a place to spend the winter, to stop for the following seasons, or as a station for further migrations to the south. Historically, in fact, this area is also known because it was the favorite hunting ground for the pharaohs and the noble elites that followed one another during the various historical periods.

Fayoum Egypt

Visitors usually do not spend much time in Madinat Al Fayoum (The City of Fayoum) and tend to spend more time in the green and agricultural lands around the lake to enjoy the countryside and nature.

Fayoum is home to important archaeological sites.

Fayoum is also home to important archaeological sites. For example, Qasr Qarun is a temple from the Ptolemaic era located on the western shore of the lake dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, since the offspring of this species used to proliferate in the springs of the oasis. Most of Fayoum’s archaeological heritage dates back to the Middle Kingdom, during which time the oasis was a center of political power. As a result, the desert surrounding the Fayoum area is dotted with pyramids. The pyramids of Lahun, Lisht, and Hawara, unfortunately, do not enjoy a good state of preservation – more like a pile of debris than real pyramids – but the fourth pyramid, called Meidum’s pyramid is quite impressive, especially considering its peculiar structure.

What to do and visit at Fayoum

Among the most famous centers, particularly in recent years, there is the village of Tunis.
