Lake Nasser Facts

Lake Nasser is the artificially created lake in one of the basins of the Nile River. Located in the south of the country, its extension extends beyond the borders of Sudan. In fact, only the area located on Egyptian soil is called Lake Nasser, which reaches almost 85% of the total area, while the inhabitants of Sudan call the part that is in their country Lake Nubia.

It was created following the construction of the Aswan Dam, which took place between 1958 and 1970. Measuring approximately 550 kilometers long and 35 kilometers wide in the vicinity of the Tropic of Cancer, the largest area, it covers a total area of about 5,250 square kilometers with a water capacity of 157 square kilometers.

As for the construction of the dam, and as the water level rose, some of the archaeological remains found during the works had to be transported block by block and relocated. Among them, the most famous and important may be the temples of Abu Simbel.

As if all this were not enough, the great totality of the Nubian community that was settled in Egypt had to be displaced since with the rise of the water level their towns ended up disappearing.

The dam project, which did not escape controversy, was devised by the Egyptian president of the time: Gamal Abdel Nasser, from whom the aforementioned artificial lake takes its name.

At present, cruises are organized by the same for tourists who are visiting the area.
